Roles for 2 women and 2 men (age 35-45) Forty-somethings Gabe and Karen have been married 13+ years and fully expect to remain the best of friends with Tom and Beth, friends who will "grow old and fat together." But when Tom and Beth unexpectedly break up, this close friendship is thrust into turmoil, and the couples reexamine their relationships with each of their friends as well as each other. A successful food writer and connoisseur, Gabe is dependent on his wife and his marriage. When his college buddy Tom leaves his wife for another woman, he begins to question his own feelings and attitudes about life and love. Karen is sensitive but opinionated, and maternal to a fault. As her friend Beth experiences a renewed self-confidence, Karen starts wondering just how much change their friendship can withstand. Lawyer Tom is seemingly more comfortable with himself than Gabe. But behind this façade lies a man lonely, scared, and worried about growing old. He's intent on seeking the most out of life and love. Beth is artsy, ditzy, and neurotically innocent, but what emerges over the course of the play is a woman scarred by a bad relationship, who is intent on reinventing herself, even if it costs her a friendship.
